CNY Fiber Artist & Producers of NY

CNY Fiber Arts Festival offers workshops to visitors of all skill levels.    The workshops described below were offered in 2018.  Information on the 2019 classes will be posted here as soon as it is available.

It is the instructor's responsibility to register students and collect class and material fees (CNY does not take a percentage). Students will  contact the instructor to register using the information found here. The instructor will decide whether to take walk-ins or not.  Denise will keep in touch with the instructors and be available if help is needed.


Introduction to Drop Spinning               

      Saturday June 9, 2018   11:00 am - 12:00 noon

Instructor:  Kim Parkinson     Booth A 20

Description:  Want to learn to spin the way the Vikings did?  Come join this simple, instructive and fun class covering the basics of how to spin using a drop spindle.  Class is open to all ages and levels of skill-no experience necessary.  Course fee includes a spindle to keep as well as fiber and instructions.  A great introduction to the world of spinning!  

Begin to Spin on a Wheel

Description:  Learn to make your very own, unique handspun yarn on a spinning wheel!  We'll play with several types of prepared wool while we discuss wheel maintenance, drafting, treadling, plying and finishing techniques to make a balanced yarn.  As time permits, we'll touch on other fiber preparations.  No previous experience required.  Warning:  Spinning can be addictive!

"Bringing the Sky Down"-Dyeing with Indigo

Instructor:  Susannah White of Carapace Farm  (Booth # C8)

Description:  Uncover the mysteries of an ancient plant dyeing technique, bringing a beautiful sky blue to the CNY Fiber Festival.  Learn the history of Indigo, the chemistry behind the process, help create an indigo vat, and discover early fabric patterning techniques.  Fabric samples (including a silk scarf) will be provided for each participant for dyeing, but you are welcome to bring small amounts of additional fabric, fiber or skeined yarn to put into the pot.  Space is limited.

Make a Felted Bowl

Description:  Make a bowl, vase or other vessel using nothing but colorful wool, soapy water and some elbow grease!  These vessels make great gifts, decorations or desk organizers.  No prior experience required.   Felting is most easily accomplished standing up, and requires gentle but sustained physical effort; wear clothing that can get wet .
